Lawrence is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts. Located on the Merrimack River, Lawrence is surrounded by Methuen, North Andover, and Andover. The city is part of the Merrimack Valley and it has a population of almost 78,000.
Lawrence was originally an industrial city, although the decline of its wool industry left it struggling during the 1950s. City officials have made great strides in revitalizing the area with urban renewal of the cities poor communities. The downtown area of the city was torn down in the 1970s and replaced with parking for the malls. The rest of the historic Wood Mill along the river was converted into residential and commercial use over the last decade.
New residential construction continues in Lawrence to this day with many new multi-family housing developments completed in the last few years. Despite the number of new homes built each year, there are also many historic homes for sale in Lawrence, MA. Many older homes in Lawrence are in the traditional Massachusetts Cape Cod style.
